I love this spoken words song by Californian artist Rod McKuen. He can feel and has the amazing ability to express his feelings to words.
He was a dear friend and collaborator with the French artist Jaques Brel. His translation/renditions of Brel's stuff is the BEST!
I could go on but it would be better to go here for that: Bio
I would have to say that as a DJ back in the 90's one of my favorite songs which sampled 'The Gypsy Camp' was 'Barefoot in the Head' by A Man Called Adam. (They should put that in wikipedia! If you can tell me what band came from the split in this group i'll send a copy of the song!) Please don't cheat and you have to be registered! If you haven't heard it or the original, here's the lyrics for you to enjoy.
The Gypsy Camp
I put a sea shell to my ear and it all comes back
The yellow sun, . . . . the Mediterranean blue, the sky,
The children running on the beach that day,
The kildear birds marching in formation down to the sea, and back -
Down to the sea and back,
When my memory wanders, as it does when bad things happen,
I put a sea shell to my ear and it all comes back;
That day, . . . . you,
Even the gypsies.
It all comes back.
You see what loving does:
It makes you trust in horoscopes,
And gypsy wands and fortune tellers,
And even the sea shells.
I still believe in love.
It's hard these days, you know.
And yet it's still the great adventure;
Better than blowing bridges,
Or a bus ride to Chicago.
Even better than running away from home, . . . . to
Join the gypsies.
